The Vocoder for the 21st Century

Kraftwerk using MATRIX Vocoder live

The Vocoder was invented by Homer Dudley in the mid-30's of the last century. Dudley worked at Bell Laboratories, and this is where the first Vocoder took shape.
The basic function of a Vocoder is characterized by an analysis of the input signal, usually speech but other type of inputs can also be very interesting. In a special filter bank, a spectral analysis is performed and signals are developed which follows the amount of spectral energy in each channel. Another part of the analyzer tests if there are unvoiced or voiced sounds at any particular time and extracts the pitch of the voiced sounds. The output section of the vocoder consists of a stereophonic synthesis filter bank which assembles the new synthetic speech from the characteristic filter envelopes from the analysis stage together with an external or internal replacement signal.

What makes MATRIX different to the vocoders in the past ?

- Precise analog modelling 8-pole filters and extremely fast envelope followers  for unprecedented resynthesis quality.

- New voiced/unvoiced detection and pitch extraction algorithms for high intelligibility.

- Stereophonic synthesis filter bank preserves the spatial characteristic of the replacement signal.

- Easy to use interface.

- Latency free operation.

Kraftwerk08

VirSyn is proud to report that Kraftwerk used our MATRIX Vocoder live on stage at their world tour 2008. Starting in September in Dublin, Krakow and Kiev and in the following concerts in Australia, New Zealand, Singapur and Hongkong. The MATRIX vocoder was used there live as a VST3 effect in Cubase 4 on a Sony VAIO FZ laptop.

MATRIX 2: Two Vocoders in one !

Inspired by the legendary VSM 201 Vocoder from Sennheiser we´ve spent MATRIX an additional Filter module modelling the analog Sound of the VSM.
But to make it even better we´ve extended the filter range by adding two additional filters for the high end and MATRIX got two Filterbanks for stereo operation.

MATRIX 2 also comes with a redesigned user interface, some additional presets and we´ve spent an internal noise generator for whisper effects.

Comments

...i am currently looking for new vocoding software after switching to a mac having used xxx vocoder for a while, and thought I would congratulate you on an amazing piece of software, the bottom end on the vocoder is just insane, it goes way deeper than any of the competition. Thought I would send you a track I just did today which features your vocoder heavily. Currently I am into mixing french house style with chopped up tracks with a kraftwerk feel. Anyways well done, hope you like the track it was just a bit of fun and to show how quick it is to use your software in Logic Studio :) Track is called De-Con-Struct-Ion by the way :)

The MATRIX Vocoder is now compatible to the new VST3 standard - the next major revision of Steinberg’s Virtual Studio Technology. The new side chaining capabilities in VST3 makes the handling of MATRIX much easier.

Please note that the VST3 standard is brand new: You have to update your Cubase/Nuendo to the latest version 4.1.2 or later to make use of it.

The update also includes a polyphonic generator now.
